Domotics

Domotics integrates technology and services in households and organizations. We are used to seeing every technical solution separately, but, by combining your alarm system with other applications, domotics (also known as ‘the internet of things’) is formed.

Domotics, or house automation, is not a new phenomenon. In 1989, Chriet Titulaer introduced the house of the future, a house sporting all the newest technology (at that time). Domotics was interesting but mostly very expensive back then. Currently, domotics is wireless, which eliminates the need for a drastic renovation. With your smartphone or tablet, you have the main station at the tip of your fingers which enables you to control a number of devices.

Combined with your security system, domotics creates a safer living environment. The possibilities and applications are endless. When arriving home, the lights are on, the system creates the illusion of someone being home when you are actually away. In case of a fire, the system can determine whether a shutter, exhaust system, window or room needs to be opened. It is also possible to turn off the power for every device, when you are sleeping or going to work for example, to preserve energy. Remote control of your security system, lighting, heating, air-conditioning, shutters and observation system is within your reach.

Domotica the internet of things.

Besides offering more safety, other uses of domotics are providing an increase in comfort and helping preserve energy. Domotics can also be used for a completely different purpose: increasing the time elderly people (their numbers will only grow as time goes on) can independently stay in their own homes. Domotics can play a big role in the independence and self-sufficiency of people.

DOMOTICS CAN BE USED FOR BOTH ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SECURITY.
Passive security means that the house will check whether the inhabitant is active. The motion sensors of intruder protection uses an intelligent clock to check, combined with electrical devices and lighting, whether the resident has moved recently. The installation of, for example, automatic lighting is not just for comfort, but also adds another layer of safety by lighting the drive way. Another example is, by adding a switch in the kitchen, it is possible to configure turn off the stove automatically, in case the user forgets when leaving the kitchen. For every situation and every budget, there is a custom domotics solution possible. SBA Beveiliging will gladly advise you on your possibilities.

THE COMFORT OF DOMOTICS

What does domotics mean? The word “domotics” is a contraction of the Latin word for house, “domus”, and the word “electronics”. Wikipedia explains the term domotics, also known as home automation, as follows: “the usage of electronics to automate processes in the house and its surroundings”.

What can you do with domotics? The possibilities are endless. For starters, you can integrate domotics with a (existing) security system, to create a safer living environment. Domotics can be installed both wired and wireless.

Your smartphone or tablet places the main station in the palm of your hands, which you can use to remotely control your security system, lighting, heating, air conditioning, blinds and surveillance system at any given moment. Domotics can provide a lot of convenience and comfort in the daily life. We will provide some examples below, on some of the many applications domotics can have.

The convenience starts with waking up. The central unit of the system controls the temperature in the house, makes sure you wake up with your favourite music playing and opens the curtains in the bedroom automatically, to give you time to adjust to the daylight. The bath is filled with water and the coffee maker is turned on, the moment you leave the bathroom. When you are ready to go, the system turns off all systems, locks the doors and enables the alarm. Your house is safe during your absence.

When you return home after a long day of work, the system has enabled the outdoor lighting. By integrating the GPS function on your smartphone, it is possible to disable the alarm, open the door of the garage and turn on the lights in the house. When the night falls, the lighting turns on automatically and the blinds or curtains are closed by the system.

If someone rings the door and you are using your television, to watch a movie for example, the system pauses the movie, turns on the lights near the gate and show you the camera(s) of the area on the screen of your television. With one press of the button, you can open the gate or door and continue watching your movie at any time you want.

SAFETY INSIDE THE HOUSE
X

Domotics also has a lot of applications in security. Installing domotics gives your house senses, to smell, hear, see and feel. How do these senses operate? A system with integrated surveillance cameras enables the smartphone or tablet to access them. It is even possible to remotely control the cameras, for example zoom in and out.

By connecting smoke detectors to the Domotics system, it gains the ability to turn on all lighting and air control and unlock the doors in case of fire. It also can send a notification to the control room or a text message to your phone.

The moment the doorbell rings, you can make the system automatically turn on the lights and, if there is an intercom installed and connected to the system, send an image to your smartphone or tablet, in order for you to see who is at the gate.

Motion or presence sensors can be used to turn on lighting and/or devices automatically, as soon as motion has been detected. The sensors can see where you are walking, for example, and turn on the light in the room you are currently in. When you are absent or on holiday, the presence simulator creates the illusion of the house being inhabited. You can make the blinds or shades open and close automatically, as well as turning the lighting on and off, at different times.

Depending on your wishes, there are many more possibilities to increase the safety in and around your premises.

PROLONGING INDEPENDENT INHABITATION WITH DOMOTICS

Domotics is not just for comfort and convenience in the house, but can also undertake many different caring responsibilities. Elderly and disabled people can live independently a lot longer, if helped by smart surroundings.

By using Domotics, it can be made possible to open and close doors, windows, sunscreens and curtains from your bed, wheelchair or chair. Important is “turning off” the house, after the inhabitant leaves the house. The system turns off the lights and checks whether devices as the cooking range and the coffee machine are still turned on, it can also turn them off.

Another practical application is the automatic control of the lighting, as soon as the inhabitant goes out of bed at night. The intensity of the lights can be adjusted, in order to not be blinding.

It is also possible for the system to function as a passive social-medical alarm system. By adding motion sensors, the system can see when there has been no motion for a long period of time, while the inhabitant is present. In case of emergency, for example when the inhabitant has fallen on the floor, help can be called in.

Smart usage of Domotics can aid and prolong the independent habitation of elderly and disabled. Home automation systems are easy to expand, and can thus grow with the required (medical) needs, adjusted for the wishes of the individual
